Summary: Sami Callihan and Eugene Jannetty are different from each other, but they both have armor, forged by experience, to deal with the world they were born into.

Note: To use the AO3 relationships parlance -- while this takes place in a continuity where "Sami/OC" is the endgame, this particular piece takes place before "Sami & OC" is even a thing.

Armored

Alpha. Beta. Omega.

Each one comes with its own expectations, its own burdens. In other aspects, a person may change, but the type that one presents as upon maturity... that is immutable. Society has built up assumptions over time, ideas of what each type is like -- forceful Alphas, prone to fits of temper and violence; tractable Omegas, easy to mold and sway, victims of biology and the lust that so easily overtakes them; placid and steady Betas, filling whatever role is needed, from placating Alpha rage to soothing Omega pain.

Alpha. Beta. Omega.

Sami Callihan has done everything he can to turn Beta convention on its head. He will not bend to the demands of the other types, no matter what is expected of him. He hates the cage of their assumptions, hates that those who know his typing are always sketching out a little mental box to keep him in.

There are reams of health forms and legal documents that say it, over and over again: Sami Callihan is a beta male. There are concrete facts attached to that classification. There are physical differences between him and an omega male, and even more between him and an alpha male. There is the reality of the pheromone blockers and heat suppressants he has to take in order to participate in mixed-type athletic competition, where proximity while unmedicated might lead to unexpected or unwanted complication. There are things that hold true no matter how any beta male might wish it otherwise.

Alpha. Beta. Omega.

None of that changes who Sami is, touches the core of his personality. None of that means he has to be a peacemaker. None of that means he has to be nice.

And Sami makes it a point to be mean. His innate tendency toward methodical and analytical becomes critical, disparaging when people don't measure up to his perfectionism. He is blunt to a fault. He delights in seeing others fail to meet his standards, because it means he can pick them apart. Call him wicked, call him cruel... most of all, call him contrary to what it "means" to be a Beta.

He never asked for his typing. He never asked for the assumptions that come with it. Those assumptions make him angry, and he isn't shy about showing that anger or that scorn.

'I am not who you will have me be. I am myself. And you will have to deal with it.'
