Uncaged

For years now, the moisture farm felt more like a prison than a home, as Luke longed for a larger life, out in the wider galaxy. The familiarity of the place grated on him, as he dreamed of new experiences and grand adventure, and every instance of Uncle Owen's gruff protectiveness made Luke feel as though the bars of his cage were narrowing. But now...

He races home, pushing the landspeeder to the limits of its capability, hoping against hope that he's wrong -- that the Imperial troops weren't able to figure out who bought the droids.

Luke turns into the spot where he always parks the landspeeder, and he isn't sure what to make of the sight that meets his eyes. The moisture collectors are untouched. Black smoke billows from the aboveground domes of the moisture farm, and yet nothing moves. Someone should be trying to put out the fire.

"Uncle Owen!" Luke calls, "Aunt Beru!"

No one answers. He runs forward, desperately scanning the familiar ground. Scorch marks mar the outside of the main dome -- blast points. Luke is reminded of Ben's words, and pushes them away.

"Uncle Owen!" He calls again, but any further words die in his throat. Two smoking bodies lie at the entrance to the living quarters. He stares, unable to look away at first.

Luke could rebuild the farm, in time. But in his heart, he knows that home is lost to him forever.

Oof, poor Luke. This was great; I also really love the title for this one and how the seemingly positive idea contrasts with the loss in the fic. Good work!
