False Dichotomy

She awakens to darkness, mouth burning and head throbbing. She moves, she tries to sit up, and many hands reach out to press her flat to the hard surface she is lying on.

"Oh, my dear," a familiar voice says out of the dark, "you're not going anywhere."

"Mitchell..." Su Yung rasps, hatred dripping from the name just as the Asian mist dripped across her lips and chin. "You know you can't kill me."

Father James Mitchell cackles, still unseen. "Who said anything about killing you? What a waste that would be."

"I won't serve you either!"

She knows when he touches her, even if she can't see him. The bridesmaids, who hold her down, are cold as corpses. His hands are warm as they cradle her face.

"Poor, poor Su..." Father James croons, fingers fanning out to trace patterns of binding on her skin. She shrieks, tries to struggle free, but the bridesmaids -- undoubtedly summoned by him and under his control -- grip tighter and lean into her, hold her still. His nails dig into her flesh, not yet drawing blood, "Nobody wants you..."

She tries to shake her head, to shake him off -- he tightens his grip and the skin of her cheek gives under the pressure, bloody furrows opening in the wake of his sharp nails.

"Nobody wants you... they want sweet little Susie..."

They want me?

"No!" Su Yung screams. Susie is a weak fool, a joke! Susie is weak enough to believe in promises of friendship, weak enough to be hurt in the name of another. Fool enough to be betrayed. "I am not Susie! I cast her away!"

"You mean that simulacrum who taunted Deonna and Kimber for you? It was barely animate, not at all suitable to house a cast-off anthroparion." Father James has to be smiling -- she can hear it in his voice, even if she can't see it on his face. "I killed it, of course. Susie went back to you, and now I'm going to give her control."

Fingernails scrabbling against the cage of her skull; the burning in her mouth is crawling down her throat like a salamander. She chokes for a moment, hears Susie's childish voice calling,

"Let me out! Oh, please, please! Let me out!"

No. That voice is coming out of Su's own mouth.

"Never!" Su howls, "I'd rather die!"

Father James laughs, and the undead bridesmaids giggle tauntingly as well. One hand moves from her bloodied face.

"You know you can't die," he chides, just before a heavy fist -- his fist -- slams into her chest, right above her heart. Her heart stutters under the onslaught of mystic power in the blow.

Su doesn't have the air to scream. All sensation and thought are scattered like dead leaves. All that is Su Yung will be trampled underfoot to make way for Susie instead.

Not Susie. Not Susie.

If she cannot fight, if she must fade... if she must surrender and slumber anew... she does not want to be Susie again.

Anyone but Susie.

Anyone?

"Come out, come out... wherever you are..."

Su Yung is being smothered, is being drowned... yes, yes, anyone but Susie. Never be that weak again...

Su's eyes drift closed... she draws in a sharp breath...

Dark eyes open again, in a face unmarred by blood, no longer shrouded in the heavy makeup of Su Yung. A light shines faintly overhead. The bridesmaids withdraw their grasping hands, and a few exchange confused looks.

"Well," Father James says, "I didn't expect that."

Susan sits up and dusts off her blazer. "I'd say I'm sorry to disappoint," she replies crisply, "but I think I rather like disappointing you."
